About

A community of people getting better together.

Cold water, warm people. One jump, every Friday, open to absolutely anyone — and a philosophy that runs deeper than the lake.

Three Frosty Fridays jumpers by Lake Michigan
( 01 ) — The story

From an Australian ritual to a Chicago institution.

Back home in Australia, Jacob White and his mates ended every week the same way: a Friday morning ocean swim, then coffee before work. They called it Frosty Fridays.

When Jacob moved to Chicago in November — mid-winter, knowing almost nobody — he kept the ritual going alone in Lake Michigan. As it warmed up, he wondered whether anyone would join him, and posted an open invitation. About fifteen people showed up to the first jump in April.

Now it's a hundred-plus every Friday: runners, cyclists, tourists, first-timers, newlyweds — counting down together at the Lincoln Park Chess Pavilion ledge, jumping, and coming out feeling like a million bucks. Third Rose Coffee pours after. Jacob still introduces himself to nearly every jumper.

( 02 ) — The philosophy

"Every day looks the same. The curse of indiscipline is that every year does."

no. 1

Discipline over motivation.

Motivation sleeps in. The jump happens at 7:00 AM either way — and that's the point. One kept promise a week compounds into a different year.

no. 2

Radical positivity.

Nobody has ever regretted the jump. We celebrate first-timers, cheer the hesitant, and hand you a towel and a coffee when you climb out.

no. 3

Everyone's invited.

Free, forever, no sign-up. Show up unannounced — it's a proud Frosty tradition. The only membership card is a wet towel.

Jacob White after a Frosty Fridays plunge
( 03 ) — The founder

Jacob White jumps first.

Jacob's whole thing is that getting better is a practice, not a mood. He moved countries alone, built a community from a lake ledge, and is currently deep in Ironman training — swim, bike, run, repeat — documenting the whole thing at @jacobgetsbetter_.

Ask him why a hundred strangers jump into a cold lake with him every week and he'll tell you it's the simplest deal in the world: do one hard thing, first thing, together — and the rest of the day feels easy.

"Initially I started because I wanted to make friends. I was jumping in the lake by myself — as it got warmer, I wondered if anyone else would be interested."Jacob White · Founder
( 04 ) — The vision

Chicago is chapter one. Every cold shoreline is a future Friday.

The ledge is where it started, not where it ends. Frosty Fridays is built to travel — the countdown, the coffee, the colony. If you want to bring it to your city, we want to hear from you.
